As one of the leading bands for hire in London, The Talent know a thing or two about how to get people up on the dance floor. The fact is, there are certain songs that you just can’t help but move to – tracks to which even the most resolute non-partiers must tap their feet. But what exactly is it about such songs that make you want to dance? What elements go into a boogie-tastic dance floor hit?
The Rhythm Is Gonna Get You
The beat of the song tells you when to move – so a good beat not only encourages people to dance, but makes the song easy to dance to as well. It’s possibly the most important thing about a dance hit!
But what’s a “good” beat?
First of all, it needs to be simple enough to pick up on – that’s why most pop and rock songs are in a pretty simple 4/4 time signature, as it’s a familiar beat that you don’t need to be an expert dancer to move to.
But there’s a bit more to it than that –breaks and gaps in the beat are also important, giving you a space that encourages you to move. The most danceable songs, then, are those which have a simple basic beat that you can pick up on easily, with complex syncopated layers that provide those pleasing breaks for you to fill with movement. Want an example? Just try sitting still whilst listening to Happy by Pharrell Williams.
I’ve Got The Key, I’ve Got The Secret
This one isn’t black and white; in fact our previous example goes right against it (it’s in F minor) – but you’re often more likely to want to dance to a song in a major key. Why? Well, if a tune’s written in a major key, it tends to sound more upbeat and happy, which is the kind of thing you want to dance to. Songs in minor keys can sound sadder, and even a little bit creepy – just listen to this rendition of Happy Birthday To You in C Minor...
That Old Familiar Song
A popular classic hit is more likely to fill a dance floor than something that just came out that day – just because people recognise it right at the start and already know that they want to dance to it. That’s why The Talent have an extensive repertoire of big, familiar hits from various decades to fill any dance floor!
Everybody Dance Now
People who don’t usually dance can often be tempted onto the dance floor by songs which have a specific set of dance moves. If you’re not confident about your dancing ability, then just knowing what to do – and knowing that just about everybody else will be doing the same thing – is a great confidence booster. There’s the Y.M.C.A, the Macarena, Prince Charming, Saturday Night, Steps’ 5,6,7,8, the Conga, and, of course, the video that broke YouTube’s view counter, Gangnam Style by Psy.
Whatever your event, The Talent can get your party jumping, bring your guests out on to the dance floor, and give everybody a great night to remember.
