Originally recorded by indie band The Zutons, the song fell into the hands of Mark Ronson who released a cover featuring the voice of Amy Winehouse. Seeing as everything Ronson touches turns to gold, it’s no surprise that the song became a massive hit.
I Will Always Love You – Whitney Houston
This classic is often attributed to Whitney, but it was written and recorded by the brilliant Dolly Parton way back in the 70s.
It’s My Life – No Doubt
This song just seems so perfect for the rock band, that it’s hard to believe the song was ever meant for anyone else, but British synth-pop band, Talk Talk released the song back in 1984.
Respect – Aretha Franklin
This Aretha classic was originally written and recorded by the great Otis Redding. Aretha Franklin’s version of the song features the ‘R-E-S-P-E-C-T’ chorus that we all know and love, and evoked a feel of female empowerment which was lacking in the original.
Nothing Compares 2 U – Sinead O’Connor
This song was made famous by Sinead O’Connor when she released it in 1990 with the iconic video. But not many people know that the song was written by Prince and recorded by his side project - ‘The Family’ – in 1985.
